Hi everyone! I have a simple question concerning the Spanish long "r" sound. I have mastered the little "r" with little difficulty, however, the long "r" is quite a nuisance. I either growl in the back of my throat like a dog, or vibrate my tongue, producing a sharp "s" hissing noise like a snake. Any help on this would be more than appreciated!

Relax. It'll come.

Most people worry to much about it and the tongue gets tense and doesn't move.

You don't sound relaxed.... ;-)

When I say relax, I really mean it. Most people fail to say the RRRR sound because their tongues are too stiff -- they put too much effort in. If you stop worrying and you let your tongue physically relax a bit, you'll find that it's more springy and will bend and bounce and flutter when it needs to.

How it ended up coming to me was by pressing the tip of my tongue firmly against that little ridge (Alveolar ridge) in your mouth and pushing as much air as I could so that it made a loud bzzzzz sound (and if no sound was coming out, then no air left my mouth mouth, it was all directed on top of your tongue). If you mess around with the positioning of your tongue some and (like Cainntear said) relax your tongue a bit (figuring out how to do this is the real challenge, I think), you will find the tip of your tongue flapping about wildly :P I found that by trying to overdo it at first it helped me learn to relax my tongue. Good luck!

By the way, how similar are the rolled versions of the "r" in Spanisch, European Portuguese and Russian?
