Bao thanks for the link. That's quite a list. there doesn't seem to be any other way to narrow the directory down by catagory....
EDIT: referring to your OneManga link.
EDIT: ah, there it is! -- found the catagories list
Great input!

Definitely give Death Note a try.
You might also have heard of "visual novels", many of which feature erotica to various degrees of discomfort depending on the individual. Some of the recent games however, have no nudity at all and are entirely story-based. They almost all involve romance stories, and keeping in mind that the target audience are mostly sex-deprived geeks, don't offer much realistic depictions of relationships. Regardless, many people seem to enjoy them.
The language used is usually at seinen level so furigana is not provided save for unusual words; you can however usually scroll back and play back any spoken dialogue.
One prominent game in this genre without any erotic content was Clannad, which spawned a rather popular anime series. Personally I hated it, but I dunno, you might like it. The company which produced this game also produced several other games with similar themes; you can take a look at the varying levels of adult content in the games through that link. Out of those games I personally only like Air to any degree.
I'm not too into this genre myself but I had a friend who swore by these games as a great way to gain listening comprehension and reading skills simultaneously.

looks intriguing, but it's something more along the lines of what my husband would go for..not quite what I'm looking for at the moment. I may get it anyway since the list of what I've found so far is quite short.

yes I've been wondering about that! If I can buy issues also found at OneManga.com I can always check the translation, assuming of course the Eng-translation at OneManga is accurate. (Is it?) Then it would be no problem to cross-reference an online-dic for the pronunciation. Other than that I think if I stick to sophomore-level content I shouldn't have too much trouble. That's what study is all about.
I'm still going over some lists. I went through the whole josei catalog yesterday and didn't find much that sparked my interest. I read 5 issues of Deka Wanko last night. It's about a 22 year-old female detective who looks like a poodle but wants to make it in a field predominated by men. She has a special gift (she can smell people!) which allows her to solve the crimes. Her character always has a blank cupid-expression; she can't seem to handle herself well yet. What's most interesting are the male characters. They hate her being there but are forced to recognize her at the same time. Her detective colleagues are always having to justify her having access to detective work. Two local police cause a big scence and won't let her enter the crime scene because she looks like a joke in her frilly skirt and pig-tales, and her detective colleagues look at one another and say "look, could you take care of that ?.." Hysterical.
I was planning on reading densha otoko next. Then I'd like to follow up on some of the other suggestions here.
