I recently bought a copy of 'Mon PC prend la parole'. It's the sort of software that reads your Word documents to you, and I wondered if it would help students of French.

The voices aren't synthetic, there are three voices - Isabelle, Francois, and an English lady, Shirley. Words have been recorded by these actors to a dictionary database and the software tweaks them to cope with commas, full stops, question marks etc. As these things go, it's pretty good.

The reason for my interest is that audio magazines (ie, with a CD and accompanying text) use studio voices for levels up to the magazine 'Champs-Elysees' The voices are very clear, the delivery moderate - and that helps students. At this level students can understand a French news broadcast, but not much else. The jump from that level to the 'real' French of the steet, of TV, of films, is immense, and as I've observed before, even the top level French exams don't go to this level.

So the idea would be to provide the original recording, and one done by Francois or Isabelle. An intermediate step to facilitate comprehension

As an example, and frankly as a giggle, I've uploaded to www.sonsenfrancais.org/tmp two mp3s. One is Coluche with the great sketch 'Mon papa est balaise' and the other is Francois reading it. He breaks me up does Francois....

What do you think? I'd be particularly interested in the views of people who are learning French, and find listening and understanding rather difficult.
