Chinese "ba" construction and ten | ||

Hi all- working my way through Yip Po-Ching's intermediate grammar,
unit 1 and I already have a question. Hopefully someone here can help. Please translate each of these four sentences (into mandarin): 1.) You should open all the windows. 2.) You should not open all the windows. 2.) You should have opened all the windows. 3.) You should not have opened all the windows. Please answer only typing in pinyin, as my spoken level is WAY above my reading level (i know, i know..) Here are my translations, please correct or improve upon if need be: 1.) Ni ying gai dou da kai chuanghu. (no "ba" usage...can this sentence be rephrased utilizing the "ba" construction?) 2.) Ni bu ying gai dou da kai chuanghu. (ditto) 3.) Ni ying gai ba chuanghu dou da kai le. 4.) Ni bu ying gai ba chuanghu dou da kai le. Please reply! -thanks 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I think nummber 3-4 are correct, but 1-2 are a bit strange. So I corrected like this:
1.) Ni ying gai ba chuanghu dou da kai. 2.) Ni bu ying gai ba chuanghu dou da kai. 3.) Ni ying gai ba chuanghu dou da kai le. 4.) Ni bu ying gai ba chuanghu dou da kai le. can anyone confirm kimsuhee's corrections? His #1 and 2 were my second
guesses--so I'd appreciate if someone would clear up this small bit of grammatical confusion for me and i can move on to unit 2 :) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I think those [kimsuhee] are fine. I'd actually say more like:
1. Ni ying gai ba chuang ko chuan bu da kai. 2. Ni bu ying gai ba chuang ko chuan bu da kai. 3. Ni gang gang ying gai ba chuan bu chuang hu da kai. 4. Ni gang gang bu ying gai ba chuang hu chuan bu da kai. Sorry, I can't vouch for the accuracy of my pinyin, and my grammar may be a bit off. Technically, I think 2 and 4 could actually use the exact same sentence, and maybe even 1 and 3...I don't really feel the temporal part really needs to be explicit. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I just called my chinese friend for confirming my answer.
He said, it's OK, but for number 3,4 chinese don't need to use often "le" at the end of sentences.for english grammar " should have ~P.P". 'de(ξά)'is better. For example, You should have had a dinner. ->Ni ying gai chi wanfan de. 1.) Ni ying gai ba chuanghu dou da kai. Or-> Ni ying gai da kai suo you de chuanghu. 2.) Ni bu ying gai ba chuanghu dou da kai. 3.) Ni ying gai yijing ba chuanghu dou da kai de. 4.) Ni bu ying gai ba chuanghu dou da kai de. kimsuhee--my bad! I'm sorry for the "his" reference, I'm sure you're every
bit as beautiful as you are smart and talented at chinese. Back to the translations--two things, for #3-4 i think the time references definetly help clarify, like yijing for #3 and maybe gangcai for #4. Second about the "de" instead of le. Is this because of the "shi......de" structure often used when discussing events in the past tense. If so, why is there no shi used in either of the two sentences? thanks again! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I think it's simply because the "shi" is the "shi..de" construction can be omitted. You can just as well say "Ni shi yinggai ... daikai de." 1 person has voted this message useful |
