Hello, all,
I discovered that using a new or previous version of an Assimil program provides me a very significant inmprovement in fluency and vocabulary. The new edition of Assimil's "Brasilian" is still pending, and I was wondering wether i would improve my brasilian Portuguese if I worked on the Iberic Portuguese. I know I should just try and see, there is only a 55 € risk after all, but maybe someone has an experience on this ? I do know the differences betwwen the two versions, and the main feature for me is that it I have more difficulties understanding the Portuguese people that the Brasilians. The Portuguese do understand me very well. But as I use the shadowing method with the CDs, I'm wondering wether I will shadow with the Brasilian pronunciation or the Iberic one.... is it feasible or is it a source for deterioration of what I have acquired ? By the way , I'd prefer to keep the Brasilian sound, which I find much nicer though, from a foreigner's point of view of course. (Foot)note: For the French speakers who know about the "accent pied-noir**", my feeling is that the brasilian accent is to the portugues language what a marked, exuberant "pied noir" accent is to regular French. Any one sharing or disputing this view ? I am exactly in the opposite case. I learned continental Portuguese with assimil (both new and old versions), and I shadowed the assimil Bresilian, without looking at the book, just in order to pick up the rhythm of Bresilian. I think that the assimil Portuguese will boost your understanding of continental Portuguese, which is less clear and transparent than Bresilian, and has some tricky sounds. I don't think you will lose your Brasilian pronunciation as long as you keep on practising your Brasilian between your continental Portuguese lessons... Both pronunciations appeal to me and have a pleasant lilt, but of course nothing can match the incredible rhythm of Brasilian...
