What's the difference between words like: éste, ése, eso, esto? In Pimsleur I'm learning "ese hombre" and "este hombre" and the female version (esa, esta).
But I also see there is a word called eso and esto. What is the difference, they both seem to mean that and this. Also, what is correct, ese or ése? And what's the difference between these 2? This category of words are known collectively as demonstratives. You have mentioned both "demonstrative adjectives" and "demonstrative pronouns". Examples are below: Ese hombre = that man = "that" is a demonstrative adjective Ése = that one = is a demonstrative pronoun Eso, esto are also demonstrative pronouns used in cirucmstances where what you are referring to is either vague or doesn't have a particular gender.. Vamos a una fiesta esta noche. Por eso, tenemos que estar listos con tiempo. We're going to a party tonight. Because of that we have to be ready in time. The "that" (i.e. going to the party) in the above sentence is neither masculine nor feminine, so the neuter pronoun is used. The use or not of the accent relates to wether the demonstrative is used as an adjective or a pronoun Esa señora. ¿Qué señora? Ésa That lady. Which lady? That one. The masculine and feminine pronouns have an accent, the adjectives don't to distinguish them in writing. Note: Because there are no neuter adjectives, the neuter pronouns don't require an accent so it's always "eso" and "esto". Hope that helps. Andy.
