In Pimsleur I think I'm hearing this:
"Voy a ayudarLE a una amiga" But I must be hearing wrong because this would be better, right?: "Voy a ayudar a una amiga". I also don't really hear "unA", sounds like "un". But I gues that is a matter of speaking in normal speed. I know it should be "una". But that LE is weird because it really sounds they use the LE after ayudar. And should I use the "a"? I can't really hear it clearly. So is it: I'm going to help you = Voy a ayudarle? But then they also ad "a usted". So shouldn't it be "Voy ayudarle a usted" then? They say "Voy a ayudarLE a una amiga" because it wouldn't be clear without the "a una amiga" If you simply say, "Voy a ayudarle", we don't know if you are going to help a friend, your wife, or someone who you are speaking to with usted. So it could be, Voy a ayudarle = I'm going to help you (Usted) Voy a ayudarle = I'm going to help him (Él) Voy a ayudarle = I'm going to help her (Ella) To make things clear you add the "a somebody" Voy a ayudarle a usted = I'm going to help you Voy a ayudarle a él = I'm going to help him Voy a ayudarle a ella = I'm going to help her (Ella)
Yes, the "a" of "una" is being combined with the "a" of "amiga". This is like the "a" of "voy a" and "hacer" being combigned. "Voy a hacer..." You usually only hear one long "a". Did this answer your question Tuffy? 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

It did sound strange to me. I wonder why it ended up in Pimsleur like that. Would these all be correct then?

The sentences should say:
Señor, voy a ayudarle = Sir, I'm going to help you (polite form, since you're using señor) Voy a ayudarlo OR Voy a ayudar a él = I'm going to help him (can have one or the other, not both) Voy a ayudarla OR Voy a ayudar a ella = I'm going to help her (same condition as above) 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Spanish is one great puzzle :)
I understand now, thanks. I also asked my Spanish teacher (I found one for private lessons once a month or so, he's from south Amerika). He said indeed both are possible as patuco wrote.
