The most difficult part of French for me is its pronunciation(liaison, e muet, considerable discrepancy between spoken and written language, difficult and unclear vowels/diphthongs etc.). I don`t find grammar particularly difficult, although the many irregular verbs complicate the matter somewhat.

"This topic is beginning to depress me now! I really want my French to be good enough to attend a French University in 2 or 3 years time- I feel I will be able to get my reading and writing to a suitable standard, but hearing about so many people who have studied the language for several years and still have difficulties with speaking and listening comprehension is kind of worrying."
My ability to understand French still does lag behind (no problems pronouncing it, at all, though..Ive never been misunderstood or even had my <<interlocuteur>> look at me confused for a split second or anything like that), but it isn't anything that I find particularly depressing. I find it the hardest part about French, but then again since I've started to focus on it my listening ability has definitely increased significantly...and I think if I ever get to spend half a year or a year in France and can actually speak (and listen) to French all day every day, I should be able to get my listening ability to a very decent level...what can you expect if you learn a language mostly through typing it online and reading :-).

It is hard to call you on out on that one without saying "come out with us in Montreal, and see how you go" I agree, in Paris they are somewhat open to nodding their head and pretending the understand when they dont. |

--> You can't actually agree with it, because I never said that ;). Plus, when you make an assumption/guess please don't make it look like a fact. Too many people do it, and it's silly.
