Somebody please help me out, because I can hardly distinguish these two. When I'm listening, I only know which is which because I already knew the word, and when I'm speaking, even if I emphasize, they still sound the same. And if I emphasize too much it becomes weird. This really creates a problem for distinguishing "cadre" vs. "quatre" and "peintre" vs. "peindre".
Can someone put on some sort of sound file?

Epingchris, I uploaded a sound file. Hopefully it truly reflects the differences and help you in your pronunciation. If you are a French speaker, please help me check if I pronounced the words correctly.

Maybe this point can be useful to you :
- t is voiceless
- d is voiced
try to hear this difference when you listen to those sounds.
