Being a native speaker I have no perception of how hard English is. A common myth among monolingual English speakers is that it's easy to speak. I guess because of the fact that seemingly everybody knows English but yet those monolingual English speakers only know English. And check out this quote from the "List of Stuff White People Like" (Very addictive and funny)
"Finally, though they won’t admit it, white people do not believe that learning English is difficult. This is because if it were true, then that would mean that their housekeeper, gardener, mother-in-law (if they are an elite white person) are smarter than them. Needless to say, this realization would destroy their entire universe."

Be mindful these are meant to be funny(however they ring very true sometimes). If you're a white person, like me, have a good sense of humor when reading these.

My friend has that book. It was interesting, and it reminded me of how white I really am. As an aside, they may say English isn't difficult...but, look at most of the younger generation's spelling and excessive use of slang. I mean, 1337speak (leet) has become almost the normal for spelling, and it's practically a language in itself. I do my best to type in the best English I can, but it's difficult (especially when you're almost alone in doing this). So, I would even go as far as when a non-native speaker types or even reads that the non-native speaker would be more proficient than some native speakers of the language.
I hope this gives non-native speakers pride.
