Lately I've been watching the British TV show "Coupling", a sit-com about a bunch of 20-somethings in London (sorta like "Friends").
Can anyone tell me what British accent these characters are speaking? Is it "estuary"? Are different characters speaking with different accents? I can't tell. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

A combiation of Estuary and Recieved Pronunciation for most of the cast. Jack Davenport who plays the lead male role is Oxford educated whose father was a big figure in the Tory party. Most of th eothers were born and brought up in London.
The character of Jeff is played by an actor called Richard Coyle whose got more of a Yorkshire accent. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Yorkshire? I thought Jeff sounded more Welsh or...western at least.

The actor who plays Jeff isn't Welsh, but Jeff's character is Welsh.

His Welsh accent is very mixed then. He doesn't hide his Yorkshire roots very well!

Do you mean that most of the cast are speaking either Estuary or Received Pronunciation, or that most of them are speaking a mixture of the two? And just to be clear, how would you characterize Jack Davenport's accent? To me it's still all just 'British English' for now, but I want to try to hear any differences between their accents, and know what accents I'm listening to. Thanks guys. Fun show, isn't it? Oh, while were at it, in the movie "Notting Hill" Hugh Grant is flatmates with a "masturbating Welshman". Does that character in fact have a Welsh accent? 1 person has voted this message useful | |||
