I have always been interested in the Americas. The main languages I'm studying are all spoken in North America and to a lesser extent in South America, where Portuguese appears to be the most spoken language because of Brazil's huge population. I'm aware that Spanish and Portuguese are relatively close. In fact, I can understand written Portuguese almost as well as Spanish, but the spoken language is a different story. I also don't have much of a desire to study Portuguese after Spanish because when it comes to South America it was always the Spanish-speaking countries that interested me most. Nevertheless, I was wondering how useful Spanish might be in Brazil, especially for business purposes. Is Spanish widely studied and understood, or do people prefer to use English instead?
