I seem to be doing well with Russian pronounciation :-) but the one sound that I feel unsure about is "ы"

I don't think the sound is used in any other languages apart from maybe Belorussian and Ukrainian (??)

How exactly is it different from "И" ?
How can I know that I am pronouncing it right?
Is there any good trick ?

The sound "ы" uses in Ukranian too, but they use the letter "и" for it. I.e. the Ukranian word "риба" (a fish) sound as Russian "рыба". For the sound "и" in Ukranian uses the letter "i": "кiт" (a cat) sounds as Russian "кит" (but in Russian "кит" is a whale, not a cat).

cordelia0507,

"ы" is a tricky sound. I think it is may be a reason why some think Russian sounds harsh.

Think of the "short" "I" sound in English - (the one in "sit" as opposed to "seat"). I think this English sound is somewhere in between the Russian "И" and "ы". Not sure if that helps you any, though. For what its worth, if you said "sit", you'd be closer to pronouncing "сыт" than if you said "seat". When I say "seat-sit-сыт", it seems that with each word the sound gets generated further back in the mouth.

You can post a sound file of you pronouncing it, and we will tell you if you are doing it right.

I've heard it explained as an "o" but with the corners of the mouth wide apart (as in a big smile), a "Lidingö-i" (you know what I mean) and so on. A good way is to listen a lot to words with и and ы to be able to know which is which.

I don't think you will have any problems with it, really. A Russian once wanted to test me and see if I could pronounce it, so I sent him an audio file, and he said my ы was perfect. The only language I speak fluently that you don't (judging by your list) speak is French, and it has no such sound, but this ы never ever came across as difficult to me as a Swede. So I bravely think that you won't have any trouble with it either! :) A lot of people say it is a difficult sound, and then I guess learners all of a sudden suppose they won't be able to pronounce it. By the way, Swedish has a lot of Russian sounds in it (like some of the soft consonants), we just don't know it!

Great tips, thanks everyone!
Perhaps I worried un-necessarily about it. I'll make a clip and get back....

The explanation from Russianbear was good (you've got the best nick on the site!!)

(Plus I actually lived for a while in the suburb that Jeff mentioned, so yeah ;-) I know how to pronounce "I" in that style!! Pretty funny & small world !)

cordelia0507, where you a rich spoiled child? :D Or are there other types of people in Lidingö? That's the northern stereotype of the place ;)

Tric, nope, I had an insane & complicated childhood! Lidingö was just one of many places I lived in.. :-) My grandparents have always lived there though, which is why I keep coming back there. Plenty of regular ppl live there thanks to the rent regulations and all the other policies of the Social Democrats.. There are no real rich ghettos in Sweden. good thing, I think...! (First of May today, justice to all, workers of the world unite!! ) Actually, if I ever go back to Sweden I think I'd like to live up North if I could find a job there! That's enough rambling from me :-)
