Just wondering if anyone here has had experience with the Golosa ( Голоса ) textbook series. It is used at my
university. I have found no real major problems with it, but I do not have much to compare it with as my experience
is limited.

It is one of the best current Russian text books for a University course.

A friend in Moscow prefers it to most Russian language textbooks produced in Russia. The best introduction text produced in Russia is call the Road to Russia. (Study items from the Moscow State University are always excellent and sound.)

Last fall I was given a copy of Golosa (Голоса), Book 1, at our state conference for language teachers. I don't personally care for it at all, and in all fairness I haven't seen any of the ancillary materials which have been produced in tandem with it.

Golosa is not appropriate for self-study, but I'm assuming you're considering taking a course at your university. Like most modern textbooks from the big publishers -- at least the US publishers -- Golosa is hardbound, full of color, and full of color photos, which means you'll have to pay a very hefty price for a copy. (I briefly browsed online, and I see that new copies are priced at upwards of $75) That's a lot of money, and to add insult to injury, the pages sport a poor print-to-empty-space ratio. In addition, because it's not particularly "rigorous," I'm surprised to learn that it's being marketed as a university textbook; I always thought Golosa was aimed at a high-school audience.

Because I'm rarely interested in language learning in order to be able to conduct small talk (I'm far more interested in reading modern prose or non-fiction), I simply am not a member of the authors' targeted demographic. Hence my negative opinion. Plug "Golosa" into the forum's search engine, and you'll find various conflicting views in previous threads.
