Hello

I am studying Russian ab initio at university, and although I understand grammar very well, my vocabulary is not where it could be and my listening skills are not brilliant to say the least. I am going to Russia for two weeks in July and am spending the academic year starting September 2010 in Russia. Are there any sites you can recommend where I can listen to Russian; not just the news, although that would be very helpful, but also just general conversation, perhaps radio or something.

Thanks you for your help.
Большое спасибо за помощь.

The Princeton Russian course, which is freely available here, has a huge amount of audio, complete with transcripts and vocabulary lists. I've only gone through the first few lessons, but the audio seemed to mostly be everyday life dialogues, so it should work for your purposes.

The Assimil Russian audio is also available online, and if you search the forum here, you'll find a link to it.

Thanks for the help, josht. I have just tried to download the Princeton Russian course, and for some reason it will not allow me to do so.

http://languagegeek.net/?s=princeton+russian

It says here that Princeton have since made the course unavailable, and the "language geek" 's attempt at making the Princeton course accessible again since that time doesn't seem to work either... I don't seem to be able to access his link either. Do you have any suggestion as to why this might be, as I'm the world's worst with computers, unfortunately...

Thanks
Jack

There was an error in the link I provided; I left out the http:// bit, and so the forum software made the link point towards itself. Geekiness aside, the link is fixed and is now working. :) On the linked page, there's another link to download the course in ZIP format.

Despite the "news" content, I like these podcasts:

"Russian Webcasts are posted to the web twice monthly and deliver a survey of the previous two weeks' news in simplified standard Russian Listeners of Voice of America's "Special English" broadcasts will recognize the slightly slower rate of speech and textual redundancy which characterize these webcasts."

Спасибо за добавочную ссылку, jeff lindqvist.

Now that I have a few good resources, I'd be interested to read how you would use them. When listening to a report in a language, would you listen a few times and write down the main points of what was said? Our lecturers encourage us to listen to a text and transcribe what has been said.

Thanks for your responses.

Jack
