I actually think the main thing here is his confidence. He already spoke German and English apart from his native Turkish, so he had no reason to think Spanish would be difficult. A lot of it is in our heads. It's like, I'm also pretty confident when speaking Polish. Seem successful and you'll be successful.

Gary Lineker had a successful spell at Barcelona and learned the language to the extent that he can now
conduct TV interviews in Spanish. Mark Hughes joined Barca at the same time as Gary but failed to settle and apparently never learned the language. Even today, not knowing Spanish can be a handicap in Spain; back in pre-internet 1985 it would have rendered communication very difficult. As in other walks of life, it makes it so much easier to fit in abroad if you have a working knowledge of the language. Some British footballers cope but others don't seem to want to make the effort. Steve McLaren was the first Englishman in many years to manage a Bundesliga side but he conducted his press conferences in English. Granted, he was in Germany for just one year but I've seen Canadian ice- hockey coaches with a similar amount of experience stumble through interviews in broken German. I've just realized Mario Gómez is quite multilingual. He is of Spanish-German heritage, speaks English and now also Italian. A bit lucky there but still not bad ;)

That's also wrong :) "Se avessi saputo che fosse rimasto, avrei detto: rimane" (I have actually a doubt about the possible solution "Se avessi saputo che sarebbe rimasto, avrei detto: rimane") I would say that the 90% of Italians in daily speech are most likely to fail this sentence. Subjunctive is often replaced by present simple or imperfect, like "Se sapevo che rimaneva, avrei detto: rimane" "Se sapessi che rimanesse" is absolutely hilarious :D EDIT: probably he wanted to say: "Se sapessi che rimane/rimarra'/sta per rimanere, avrei detto: rimane" Edited by tristano on 30 December 2013 at 7:56pm 2 persons have voted this message useful |
