zhanglong,

There's a decent brief introduction to the topic in Ramsey's The Languages of China, although it really is just an overview. If you're looking for a more involved introduction, send me a PM. I have a PDF, which seems like a course packet for a graduate-level intro course, that I can send you that gives a pretty good introduction.

Now that I think of it, I've written a series of posts on my blog recently called "So You Want To Learn Literary Chinese?" It may be of use to people who are interested in learning to read Classical/Literary Chinese.

Ah, that is great news. I look forward to reading your blog. I'm working on a comparative study of Mandarin and Cantonese, but without reading the literature, I don't how many of my "insights" are just duplicating established research.

In other words, I have a LOT to read and study before I put pen to paper.

That is a big undertaking, and there has undoubtedly been a ton of research into it, so yes, it will take quite a lot of research before you can be sure you're not repeating anyone else. Bear in mind than a lot of research on the topic is also published in French, German, Russian, and Japanese. Happy reading!
