I have trouble imagining large numbers of people speaking Arabic in Central Asia any time soon. It would be interesting if a nearly dead Arabic dialect was revived, but there is almost no chance of that. From what I've seen, Arabic is pretty foreign to most people in Central Asia. I've run into a few people that read/speak Arabic, usually for religious reasons. However, I'd say it isn't at all common. A lot of people have a prayer memorized, but without understanding the exact meaning or grammar.
Russian and a Turkic language seem to be the way to go. I'd guess that Turkish is the language with the most resources for language learning, as weel as the most resources for reading (newspapers, literature, internet sites, etc.) If anyone knows of some good resources for learning any of the other Turkic languages, I'd be interested to hear about them. I suspect that there isn't a Pimsleur Uzbek, Turkmen, etc. 2 persons have voted this message useful |
