It seems to me that with these three lines non native speakers find themselves at a loss:

You're entirely right. This can be translated with 'touch' into English too, and used in the same metaphorical way, but 'befall' is nicer in this case, as it lets you mirror the active expression of the song. "Don't let me be touched by the fate of the weakest" is too passive - and far more open to misinterpretation.
