I'm assuming your English is good (if you're planning on working there). If so, get the Michel Thomas course, Foundation and Advanced. I'm not that convinced about the vocabulary course.

After MT, which will give you a good start, go for Learning Spanish Like Crazy, and FSI which are strictly the latin american variety. i have found the 3 street Spanish sets very good on idioms and slang.

I myself am a fan of the Learnables, which you can probably find at your local library. And if you have cable TV, its not that hard to find at the very least a couple of Spanish channels that you can begin to watch, especially childrens programs for easy listening. Good luck!

Lareconquesta -- if it starts "Spanish, with Michel Thomas, recording one" it's the beginner's course.

This is tough, I don't like recommending a program or telling you to do one certain thing, because none will get you fluent. The truth is, it is very important to do everything. The creator of this website said he read a book "How to teach yourself any language" So I thought I'd go out and read it. I really enjoyed it because before I read it, I would always ask.. What program will get me fluent? What should I do? You cannot buy Pimsleur or Rosetta Stone and think you will be fluent.
The book actually says (and what I agree with) is to go out, buy or make flashcards and pick up a grammar book. Do around 5 chapters of the grammar and learn that first, then buy newspapers, read books and magazines in your target language. You can then pick up on more grammar as you read, and highlight all the words you do not know. You then look these up and write them down on notecards. The pimsleur/Rosetta Stone in my opinion are like steroids, you use them as a supplement with the rest of your studies, because they are a help but not the answer. Just like steroids, if you take steroids you aren't going to get huge without a rigorous workout. In my opinion conversation is extremely important because it is in my opinion necessary to listen to these words spoken in a daily conversation.
