I am wanting to buy either Vocabulearn or Earworms.

The problem is, I dont know which one to get.

Vocabulearn covers 4,500 words (3 volumes = £3.95 each = £11.85), but it seems like it is a single flat rep. It says "Audio flash-card system", does this mean that it will repeat itself later on in the program, similar to an SRS, or is it said once, then moved on. It seems quite cheap, and good, and covers alot, but I don't just want flat single reps.

Earworms covers 1000 words (5 volumes (2 are released) = £7.99 each = £39.91), but it repeats the same words over an over, to a rhythmic tune, and that word is imprinted in your memory. The problem is that it covers, and will only cover, 1000 words (200 per volume).

What are your experiences, and what do you think I should buy?

Thanks loads

Hi TEL -

If you go to audible.com and search for "earworms" and "vocabulearn," you'll find that they have sound samples and reviews.

Earworms "Rapid Spanish" for example has 21 reviews there, and even a downloadable booklet. The sound sample seems a little cheesy. Not sure if the music would imprint it in my memory as much as drive me insane. ;-)

Hi TerryW

I have been on Audible and iTunes and listened to the samples, but I cannot glean any more information, that's why I am asking here.

Thanks

TEL: where did you find Vocabulearn for £3.95 per course? Amazon has vol. 3 for £19.99.

I have Vocabulearn in German, and Earworms (1 & 2) in German and French.

Vocabulearn may have its uses, but I just can't listen to it. I don't think you can
retain words just hearing them repeated a couple of times. And you only really learn
individual words, not what they mean in context. If they gave you several words, then
a sentence using them, that would be an improvement.

As for Earworms, so far I have found them quite good, but very much for beginners, or
those wanting to review beginner material. I am slightly beyond beginner in German,
and going back over the already known material with Earworms was helpful.

I didn't know a word of French when I started the French Earworms. Initially, I didn't
like it because I tried too hard to do it "actively": repeating everything. And I
couldn't make out how to say a lot of the phrases. After listening a few more times, I
realize the "passive" method does work. After 4-5 listenings, you pick up more and
more of the words you couldn't say earlier.

Earworms is not as brilliant as they make it out to be, but it's pretty good, and
certainly worth the money.
