How much time do you think is necessary, studying 1 hour each day, to achieve advanced fluency in Esperanto?
Thank you!

That's a difficult question to answer, because it depends on what you mean by advanced fluency. I was
communicating effectively (with the help of an online dictionary) in chat rooms after about 1-2 months of
studying the language (at more or less an hour a day of studying). At that point I had essentially mastered all
the points of grammar, and had a vocabulary of about 1000 root words. From there, I started building my
vocabulary with a SRS and reading esperanto texts extensively. After about 2 months of that, I had upped my
active vocabulary to about 3000-4000 root words (which of course gives me an active vocabulary of tens of
thousands of words in Esperanto thanks to the way the esperanto word building system works). So in 3-4
months I had advanced fluency for reading/writing/ Esperanto. It took me another 2 or 3 months to really
develop my listening comprehension and speaking skills (which probably remain my weakest area, because so
much of my online activity in Eo is textual based). In any case, it took me somewhere around 5-7 Months to
reach what I would call advanced fluency in esperanto. I can read it and write it with the same facility I have in
English (my native language). I can express just about any thought I want verbally. My conversational skills are
my weakest because I actually speak it so rarely. I would characterize my conversational ability as high
intermediate, but I'm confident that if I were to spend a few days immersed in an Esperanto only environment
that my fluency with speaking would jump up to an advanced level as well (this is a very common experience
among esperanto speakers who attend esperanto conferences and the like, they get a tremendous boost in
their ability after being immersed in the language for 3-4 days.

I had the same question in my mind which chronik has asked. Awake, thanks for your comprehensive reply. Although I am still a beginner in Esperanto (I have studied it for a month and finished the 10 lesson course offered by ELNA), my main interest in Esperanto is translation of literature-translation of Esperanto literature into my mother tongue (Marathi, a language spoken in area aroung Bombay) and translation of Marathi literature into Esperanto. So I would like to ask a related question- if I study for an hour a day, how much time would it require to be so fluent in Esperanto as to translate literature from and into it? Two years? Three years?

If you would like to achieve fluency asap, I can recommend the following schedule. Say you start on November 1st:
Nov 1st to Nov 30th: 30 minutes studying a lesson every day, ideally with a teacher, such as through this program, and 30 minutes to review the vocabulary and the like
Dec 1st to Dec 24th: 30 minutes spent on translating a song or reading an easy Esperanto novel such as Gerda Malaperis, 30 minutes chatting with other Esperanto speakers
Dec 27th to Jan 3rd: attend a 7-day Esperanto festival such as the Internacia Seminario for a full immersion. This is the perfect time for it, because the next meetings are only around Easter and don't last a full week.
After this you should definitely be at Basic Fluency. Then just keep using Esperanto in order to eventually reach Advanced Fluency. Maybe do the course "Vojagho en Esperanto-Lando", it's really good for advanced learners.

That's a good study plan - I wish I could follow it, but I am too busy with Chinese and Spanish right now.

Well, after 2 years of daily study, I would say I am at the level of advanced fluency. The grammar is the easy part. That can be learned in about a week, and then complex usage can be learned in about a month. (Read the PMEG). Reading good Esperanto literature and listening to Esperanto Radio shows, one can gain advanced fluency in about 1 year to 2 years.
Vocabulary is what it takes to get to advanced fluency.

Well, it takes more time than I thought.

How many root words do you think is possible to know, in 3 months of study (studying every day)?
Also, what is the multiplier for the root words? If you know 1000 root words, how many 'single words' do you know?
Thank you.

Well, I created a method of study where I can learn 600 words in 1 month. 1,000 words in 2 months, but if you read and learn "Gerda Malaperis", you'll have learned enough to run with the best :)
Gerda Malaperis is the classic "libro por progresantoj" written be Claude Piron (Also lookup the stuff by Don Harlow). If you prefer the non dead tree method, you can go to lernu.net. They have audio versions of the above also. If you can learn vocabulary quickly, you can get up to speed in 3 months. Once I joined my local esperanto club, my fluency increased tenfold. That's your best bet. Contact the country's Esperanto Group (esperanto-usa.org for the us and http://www.esperanto-gb.org/ for the UK and http://www.esperanto.org.au/ for Oz. They will tell you about local groups you can go to. I just realized you are in Brazil.
http://www.esperanto.org.br/. Brazil is sometimes seen as the Esperanto Capitol right now. A lot of good stuff come out of Brazil.
