I know I'm a beginner and probably shouldn't concern myself with it, but could someone give a good explanation of french verlan and how it came about?
I know with some words you take the last syllable and put in front.
Could anyone offer me any more information about verlan?

I give you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verlan. It explains it pretty well.
Though you might run across it on TV (rare), in music (not so rare depending on your genre of choice), or in conversation with someone(not so rare depending on the type of person), it isn't something that I as a learner of French here in Paris have been overly exposed to, or found to be too bothersome. That being said, we had a little session in class about it, and I have picked up some of what has filtered into the mainstream language, but that is about it.
I suppose it all depends on where you go and who you talk to. It is interesting, and probably not a bad way to kill a few minutes.
Thom.
