-------

In the french science mag "Science et Vie" which I bought in Sweden there are many interesting articles. In one the whole family of Tutankamon is reorganized according to the results of DNA tests. As part of this process his father Akhenaton - the heretic pharao - has been positively identified. However it has also been proved that the famous Nefertiti wasn't his mother - instead it was one of Akhenatons own sisters who had the right genes (the family relations of the pharaos were slightly weird).

In another article there is something about a hypothesis that the enormous black holes at the centers of galaxies weren't formed at a late stage. Instead they may have preceded the formation of the stars, and the violent movements of matters towards them in combination with the formation of extremely powerful jets would have caused the formation of the stars of the galaxies. Today we don't se the black holes (otherwise they wouldn't be black), but the jets that emanate from rotating black hole systems appear in our sky as quasars.

And finally there is an article about red wine, which allegedly is good for you. The problem is that I prefer chocolate milk...

Sørensen.

I have spent the weekend at my mothers' place, which means that I mostly have been watching German TV. But also TV5 in French, which for some weird reason is shown with Russian subtitles! Apparently not one employee at the cable company watch this channel.. otherwise they would have corrected the error.

But I have also made three column 'wordlists' based on Russian idiomatic expressions. The only language related book I had brought was namely a grammar written by the Dane H.C. Sørensen, which gives short and precise examples instead of full sentences quoted from minor Russian authors, like my other Russian grammar. This means that there is room for many more examples, and that I don't get distracted by irrelevant elements in the sentences. I hope this will benefit my feeling for Russian idiomatics, which still isn't something to be proud of.

I see forward to a Zoo-report from Krefeld from Fasulye. Nordrhein-Westphalen (where she lives) has had an election, where the ruling coalition has been ousted. Instead the Socialdemocrats, the Green and the (far) Leftist Party have to find out how to live together and rule, and that won't be easy. The situation has also become more difficult for the 'Kanzlerin' Angela Merkel, who probably thinks back to the peaceful days of the Great Coalition with some nostalgic feelings.

The irritating Icelandic volcano has now again emitted some ash clouds, and this time they have passed over Ireland down to Portugal and Eastwards over Spain to Northern Italy. I'm not happy about this as I have planned a short trip to the Côte d'Azur (alias the French Riviera). Buying a flight ticket these days is a gamble.

-----

Fasulye has expressed her worries about having to write about the animals of a German zoo in another language. But in this log she can write the whole thing in German.

I have visited the Krefeld Zoo once - as part of a whirlwind tour of the zoos in the Ruhr (my family and collegues thought that I had gone nuts when I announced my intention of spending my winter holiday there, but it is actually an area that is bursting with things to see because the popuation density is so high, - and most of the old polluting industry has been closed).

And the one and only time I have been in German TV was in the big annual Christmas program from Leipzig zoo. I had visited this zoo late in the year in rainy weather, and when I met the TV crew in the Tropical house they acutely needed a Father Christmas ... so there I got my TV debut.
