evening all,
I'm beginning to move away from merely translating English into French, and trying to speak it the way it is spoken rather than how my brain translates it from English. So does anyone have any good books or websites or materials or anything that has some sort of dictionary of French phrases. I dont mean idioms or sayings like je pedale dans la semoule, I mean phrases like
je n'ai qu'un livre = I only have one book, (by the way this seems realy similar to ye olde English like saying 'I have but one book', anyway I digress...)
or
je viens d'arriver = I have just arrived
or small combinations of words like
dés que = as soon as (I know the accent is the wrong way I cant get the keyboard sorted yet)
or
sur le point
or
avoir l'air
etc etc.
Those parts of French that are different from exact translations but are essential to its structure

Dictionary of Contemporary French Connectors by James Grieve has those small combinations you're looking for. It's an expensive book so you'll have to look around for a good deal. This website could also be helpful in knowing French connector words. http://www.fourmilab.ch/francais/glue.html

Ta for that. 140 smackers for the book may be a bit much for my Christmas stocking, next year perhaps, thanks for the list though, flashcard heaven!
