I'm a beginner studying French (currently a senior in college, major unrelated to language). I recently purchased the Living Language French for beginners and feel like I'm in a bit over my head. There is very little (no) instruction as to how to go about learning. You simply hit play and start repeating. The books have rules and guidelines written before the vocabulary lists, but I hardly have time to read them before the speaker begins. -- I guess I'm just looking for some guidance on how to handle this method. Did I make a mistake in purchasing it, or is it normal to feel completely useless in the beginning?

I used Living Language for French and was pretty happy with it. I'm now using it for Mandarin. I normally read through a unit a couple times and memorize the vocab by making flashcards and then get a feel for any new grammar in the unit. Then I listen to the audio until I can confidently understand it. I think living language gives enough audio to get a feel for correct pronunciation. I'm horrible at oral understanding so it took a lot of French radio and TV to get anywhere there. After about 2 weeks of 3 to 4 hours of studying a day, I started Harry Potter using wordreference.com (very heavily initially but infrequently by the end of the novel) for vocab help. Overall, I use living language to prevent bad pronunciation habits during later reading and memorization, to get a little start on vocab, and to learn very basic grammar. It works as a foundation before really starting to learn through reading novels and listening to radio.

TheNightBefore suggestion makes sense.
I've been listening first and finding it boring and not that useful (I understand almost everything so far) So I will be trying vocab and grammar first and then a run for correct pronunciation and active use. 1 person has voted this message useful |
