I've already completed the first 10 lessons of Pimsleur Polish. The language turned out to be easier than expected but now I need more material to go on. I have the "Polonais sans peine" book by Assimil, but I don't have the tapes, and I fear that if I buy them they're not good enough (and very expensive). Does anyone know other good Polish language course (beyond mere phrasebooks)?

That's the largest Polish course I've come across...and it's FSI no less.

Have you completed it? Do you still have it? Any chance of a trade?

No, I don't...nor do I no a single word of Polish. I'm intrigued because I speak half-way decent Russian for a foreigner and like slavic languages.

However, FSI is as good as it gets in my opinion.

I would risk it if you're really into Polish.

I've reviewed the FSI site and the Polish course they have is labeled FAST, meaning that it only covers survival aspects of the language.

I decided to start my approach to slavic languages via Polish because I have friends from Poland and because in writing it looks really challenging, even more than Russian (after knowing the Russian alphabet the language becomes very transparent).

Assimil's Polish tapes are quite good, you can purchase them without fear. However, I find that to get the best use out of Assimil tapes, you generally have to rerecord them, editing out the pauses and gaps between the sentences in the exercises and elsewhere, and the Polish ones are no exception. Content wise, they are impeccable. Another excellent Polish course, both book and tapes, is "Mowimy po polsku," published by Wiedza Powszechna, Warszawa, 1979. I do not know if it is still in print, but you can probably find a used copy of it or get in from a language library.

Haven't tried either of my following suggestions, however, you may want to try the Linguaphone polish course. Also, AudioForum seems to have a variety of tapes and comprehension programs you could use.

Indeed, I forgot this: I have the Linguaphone Polish course tapes, and they are absolutely excellent, even without the text, so anyone embarking on this might well want to consider investing in the whole course.
