Hey guys,

I am looking for some good tempo Russian music to listen to, hopefully understanding moe of it as I improve my vocab - thus giving a clear identification to myself regarding how far I have come and improved.

Are there any Russian groups/bands you can recommend? Preferably something with a good tempo - R&B, Hip hop, Indie, etc.

Thanks

Ben

Valerii Meladze is one of my favorites. His music has a pretty broad range but a lot of it is pretty upbeat and they lyrics are interesting. You can find lots of his songs and videos on Youtube.

Russian hip-hop? This sounds horrible... sort of like French rap. Even worse than French rap...

I can only suggest rock. You might like this one:

Here is a link to an Ebay listing. It is the style music you asked about. If you click on the listing for the music on the cd, you can read a scan of the back cover. It lists 201 Russian hits of currect popular music. You can then find most of the groups in youtube or on line. I purchased a earlier collection in the fall. I was going on a visit to Russia. I had purchased a mp3 player as a gift. I loaded the collection on the player. The teenager was happy with the player and surprised I had her Russian music loaded.

If this is not a match to your music interest. They list other collections of popular music. I think the earliest is 1950s. If you look at the listings and copy the titles, you can find a nice selection popular music for most age groups of Russians and tastes. This is not the seller for getting an over view of Russian classical music.

(I have purchased from this seller, but have no other relationship or deal with the seller. I am giving the link so you can get a listing of the pop Russian songs and artist.)

Thanks a lot for you replies guys! All of these should keep me busy for a while! :)

Sennin, I mentioned Hip Hop due to its decent tempo, and when I spent some time in Russia there was a hugely catchy song on MTV there, it made me laugh but at the same time the lyrics were sung at a reasonable pace to keep up with.

I really like Zемфира. And if you run out of artists you could check last.fm/tag/russian, I've seen a number of Russian artists there who uploaded full song previews or free downloads.

Aquarium were and still are a great band, led by Boris Grebenshikov who's something of
a legend of Russian rock. Here's one of their most well-known songs (The Town).

And another, much more recent one (Mama, I Can't Drink Anymore)

And my 5 year old daughter's favourite, from a couple of years ago (Glasses (as in
drink glasses))-

One more, whose name I can't translate...Шумелка...does it mean something/someone
who's noisy? Something like that -

www.aquarium.ru is translated into English
