Whereas last I knew Babelfish was still relying on parsing and generational grammars.

Google Translate couldn't have been done when Babelfish first came out: statistical translation takes a lot of memory and processing and only relatively recently became viable on massive servers. You could probably run Babelfish on a home PC....
