Jason, if you're at all interested in religion, polyglottery, cultural anthropology or history they're pretty useful. It would kind of suck if no one in the military spoke it either, ya think?

Yes, I'd like to travel to Iran. What about it?

Yes yes, all good reasons to learn a language. But those are subjective reasons. Whether or not a language is "useful" is something personal to everyone. I guess I should rephrase rephrase that neither Arabic or Farsi is all that useful for the average American Joe. Now if you're seeking a PhD in Near Eastern studies, or have some need to read the Quran in its original language, then by all means...

My main point is that you shouldn't pick a language to study simply because a bunch of other people speak it, which is the philosophy Vai seems to subscribe to. That really isn't the best measure for "usefulness."

I would like to specifically comment on the phrase "average American Joe." I am not an American I would like to
have you know that I do indeed use Arabic as I visit Egypt often and if you were aware enough to read the whole
post and to look at where I am from then you wouldn't be making the assumptions that I wouldn't be using it.
Usefulness is a big part and if you want to learn a language for beauty then that is fine but different languages
may apply to different motivations. If someone is learning German because they are doing business in Germany
then usefulness is a good enough motivation. If someone is learning Italian because they find it beautiful ( I
personally don't) then that is their motivation. Don't make assumptions like that.

I never assumed anything about you, frankly I wasn't even addressing your post (which I'm partially sorry for).

You've actually just reiterated what I've been trying to say here. Usefulness is in the eye of the beholder. Vai said Persian wasn't useful because "no one" speaks it. While that may be partially true, that shouldn't be used to deter someone from learning Persian.

The only thing we don't agree on is that you (and Vai) seem to think there is some general universal "usefulness"measurement that can be applied to all languages and to all people. I'm just saying to most people living on the western hemisphere, Arabic and Farsi really aren't that "useful" unless you have a specialized need for it, i.e. travel, military, academic pursuits, etc. Again, I'll make it simple for everyone here; usefulness is subjective and dependent on individual factors.

I never called you American or questioned your motivations; in fact I'm on YOUR side here, you've just backed up exactly what I've been saying, so maybe YOU should re-read MY posts, friend.

When you said that the average American won't find the use of Arabic I didn't understand what you meant and I
thought you were addressing myself. Types of motivation (usefulness, beauty, family) depend on the learner's
situation. I have Persian friends, and I travel to Egypt often, that means I have uses for both. I find Arabic to be an
attractive language, as well as Persian. So yes, it does depend on who the learner is.

It motivates me when people call me "pussy" too.
