Recently I read in _The Art and Science of Learning Languages_ (Gethin
and Gunnemark, 1996) that the best book on polyglots to come out so far
is _Kak stat' poliglotom_ (How One Becomes a Polyglot) by Dr. Dmitri
Spivak (pub. 1989).

Curious, I ordered the book from a dealer in Russia. I've read it now, and I
can say that it is a singular body of work. Perhaps it is the best on
polyglots, though I don't know as books on polyglots seem to be very
hard to find.

Anyway, Dr. Spivak discusses multilingual people from all over Russia and
their language-learning methods. It is fascinating to know how well some
rural people can pick languages/dialects without language-learning
materials.

Have others read similar profiles of polyglots? Perhaps some kind of
informal exchange of books could be done. I am very interestd in reading
more profiles of successful language learners. Anyone else?

Thanks,
Richard

Maybe it’s because they can’t read?

rcusickjr,

I join administrator's question. Do you think there are more copies around? If not, please PM me for the cost of your copying it and sending it to Sweden.

Took a couple of minutes to find the necessary software - the blog link didn't work. I finally found the DjVu Viewer, and it was kind enough to install itself. It will be an interesting test of my knowledge of Russian! Lots of thanks!!

The "official" way to read DjVu documents seems to be a browser plugin from LizardTech.
