I will be visiting Dublin this week and am wondering if there are any good bookstores carrying foreign-language books, especially for French, German, or Portuguese. Does anyone know of any, and where in the city they are? Near the center or on the south side would be nice, as that's where I'll be. Thanks.

I was in Dublin about four years ago and there were excellent second-language bookstores, I guess because Ireland has been quite active in second-language education. I was there at Christmas and the best stores, which were part of second-language institutes, were closed. I looked in a couple of windows and wished I could go inside. In the mainstream bookstores, there were large sections of excellent second language books at good prices. I don't recall names. Most are located in or close to the city centre. I simply looked in the phone book, under book stores and second language education. Here is one link I just found which includes some second language books:

On Dawson St. (near Stephens Green) there are two large bookshops facing each other, Hodges Figgis and Waterstones.
Im pretty sure both have foreign language books.
About a five minute walk from Dawson St, on Westland Row, is Modern Languages, a bookshop specialising in language learning.

Thanks for the tips. Waterstone had some language-learning materials for a good number of languages as well as some popular novels in Polish. Hodges Figgis had little more than a few dictionaries. Modern Languages had an excellent supply of learning materials in many languages and tons of material for ESL students, but not much in the way of books published in other languages that aren't about learning the language (a few in French and German). One more that I found was called International Books, near Trinity College on S Frederick St. It had a decent selection of learning materials, an excellent selection of French fiction, and good amounts of Italian, German, and Spanish fiction. A bit pricey since everything was imported, but aren't foreign books always?

I think you found the language learning centre of Dublin. The two bookshops mentioned, International Books and Modern Languages, I know too well. I love browsing in both each week. If you walk from International Books to Modern Languages, you'll pass the Cervantes Institute and then Alliance Française, with Trinity College on your right. Just around the corner on Merrion Square is the Goethe-Institut.
