Sage: Did you get into SNSD and Kara from their Japanese releases? If so, there are several other Korean groups/singers that have released in both languages as well like: 4minute, Brown Eyed Girls, CNBLUE (though many of their Japanese releases were actually in English instead), and of course BoA. (There are others as well, including several boy bands; CNBLUE is the only male group I listed above.)
Also T-ara (that CZ mentioned above) is planning to start in Japan this year (last I heard, anyway). 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Warp3: I actually got into SNSD through their Korean releases, but I really like that they have Japanese versions its good practicing for both languages. Right now I understand the Japanese versions more, but I have listened to the Korean versions more often.

Done with this semester. I'll go back to posting a few days a week here, but if I get a job for the summer (lol, not counting on it, but I'll try my hardest since I wanna pay down some of my student loans now,) I'll probably just post once a week.

I read quite a few webcomics in English (a few of which are web-versions of printed newspaper comics, but most of them aren't), but never really found any in Korean that caught my attention since they seem to be all "Japanese Manga" style comics rather than than the style I'm used to reading. Any particular suggestions?
As for me I've been working my way through my bilingual copy of 어린 왕자 (about halfway through now) and have been loading up on vocabulary from various sources. I've slowed down on working my way through the KEV6000 book as it was starting to get boring (I'm still working my way through the "B" words, but much more slowly). The bulk of my vocabulary is again coming from other sources instead (TV shows, TTMIK 이야기 transcripts, Korean user-interfaces, 등등). One place I *don't* get my vocabulary from, though, is 어린 왕자. I told myself upfront that I was *not* going to write down vocabulary from this book as I knew it would impede my progress (and honestly that is what had kept me from starting this book for so long). I've picked up a few terms anyway, just from repetition, but this is not going to turn into a vocab loading exercise, it is a reading exercise. I'm glad I've done this because it has made reading the book actually fun instead of just feeling like work. One thing of note that I *have* done for vocabulary, though, is focusing on a single topic; in this case, weather terms. My XBMC Live setup (which I have loaded on a net-top box that I use to watch videos and which I recently switched into Korean language mode) has a 날씨 page showing the current local weather and the forecast for the next few days. I grabbed all the terms I didn't know from that page one day (which was about 1/3 of the words on screen) and added them to Anki. Over the next couple days I added a few more words here and there and the last couple times I have checked there was simply nothing new there. I'd read about focusing on a single topic before and attempting to conquer its vocabulary, but that was the first time I ever tried it and I really like the result. I only go through vocab from a book I've already read. First time through, I just read it.
Yeah, one topic at a time really does work. That's why I can understand most entertainment articles now. As for webcomics, I don't think you'd like them then. Most of the ones I'm reading so far as Japanese style, though there are plenty of other kinds. I just started looking through these last night. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I started doing something I should have done a long time ago. I'm reading a bunch of articles now. Instead of looking up every unknown word, I just pick out 5 or so. Makes me read a lot more instead of dreading to read articles in the first place. For Japanese, I go through it without using rikaichan, so doing this is also helping me to remember kanji readings.
I also plan on doing that with manga and manhwa. Just go through them without looking up every single word. 1 person has voted this message useful |
