I've been lurking on this forum under my flatmate's handle for too long and this place is so useful that I thought
I'd get my own account. I had another journal for Hebrew and it really helped my language learning, so I thought I'd create a space here to store resources and complain about all of the languages I'm working with. Comments and suggestions are always welcomed and considered! I'm too lazy to list everything right now but here is a start... Russian Goal: Low Intermediate Level Completed

Goals for the rest of 2009
Modern Hebrew 1. Find an intermediate text 2. Complete 1000 word flash card set (I know some of these words already so it is not as hard as it seems.) 3. Pimsleur 3 if it comes out in time. 4. Beginning to use native materials. Russian 1. 3/4 of the way through first Princeton Russian Course 2. Pimsleur 2 and 3 3. Michel Thomas Vocab Course Biblical/Prayer book Hebrew 1. Finish First Hebrew Reader 2. Memorize and be able to translate Birchat Hamatzon Yiddish, Spanish, and everything else: nada and gornisht, respectively... Aug 27 Have not yet begun studying today even though I've made all these lofty goals!! I just read an article about Google launching Yiddish in its list of translation services. I must say that after trying it out I'm not impressed with the accuracy. I am told that the program has the ability to "learn" and will improve with time. http://www.translate.google.com/ I'm keeping up a steady diet of Pimsleur lessons...nothing else worth reporting at this point. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

more Pimsleur Russian has been completed...
In the meantime, I told an Argentine friend that I'm learning Spanish and now he is only sending me letters in that language. Maybe I will begin to study here and there, but I've got too much else on my plate to make any more commitments. O.K. so now I'm off to Brighton Beach to walk on the boardwalk and listen to all of the Russian speakers. I've loaded more Russian Pimsleur lessons on my ipod so I can talk to myself while walking and make everybody think I'm crazy. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Haven't really been writing because I've just been doing Pimsleur Russian lessons. Although Pimsleur is really slow
I feel my Russian is improving. I must say that I've needed to repeat lessons several times occasionally. I've been using Anki to begin entering Hebrew vocabulary. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

So, you're learning Yiddish? I've been learning it part time for a short while now.

J-Learner: I certainly will, thanks! I've been reading your journal as well!! I studied Yiddish for a year a few years
ago and I have Yiddish speaking relatives , but the language is on hold until I finish Russian Pimsleur and assimilate a bunch of Hebrew flashcards... My Yiddish plan is to pick up some local newspapers and start reading them and looking up unfamiliar words. So just wanted to drop in and say that I've really been focusing on Hebrew the past few days...having tons of conversations with random strangers and I'm starting to feel less shy about speaking, which is essential! I tend to be very shy about speaking so this is a milestone for me. My plan for the next day or so is to review and assimilate as many new Hebrew words as possible! 1 person has voted this message useful |
