Is it true that I have to learn a sign for every single word there is in Mandarin? How can you type them then using a computer?

In Mandarin each character represents one syllable, while most words are disyllabic. You can be completely fluent with 10.000 characters. The system I used for writing them on the computer is based on Pinyin romanisation, for example I write “hanyu” and a small window opens with all the possible characters with that pronunciation。

And how hard is that to learn? Most of them look so similar and complicated, but they actually do look fascinating. How much time would it take to be able to read a small novel and how can one actually write this?

我倒覺得一些短的宋詞、元曲是學中文的好媒 介。學中文而看不懂古文 , 可以算是白學啦。而宋詞和元曲正好是古文和 白 話文間的過渡文學形式 , 文字優美而通俗 。 這裡先介紹二首 : 馬致遠【天淨沙】 枯藤老樹昏鴉。小橋流水人家。古道西風瘦馬 。夕陽西下。斷腸人在天涯 辛棄疾【醜奴兒】 少年不識愁滋味。愛上層樓。愛上層樓。為賦 新詞強說愁 如今識盡愁滋味。欲說還休。欲說還休。卻道 天涼好個秋 古文看多了, 回過頭來看白話文 , 可說是面目可憎啦。 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||
