Which Scandinavian language to study? | ||

I'd also say as long there is over 1 million native speakers. :P .. But I'm kinda nervous (very little though) that Danish is the one of those three languages with the biggest chance of getting extinct, because of the "little" interest of learning it for those who are studying scandinavian languages. .. But I don't think it's so bad! - I'm Danish myself, and I haven't met any Dane who doesn't want to speak Danish as his/her first language. - And the kids are learning Danish from their parents, and not English, which first comes in the school, so.. No.. The scandinavian languages will not die. Uh! And one last thing: All the scandinavian languages looks (and sounds) very much alike, so it's kinda like one big language with different dialect, and with ca. 20. million speakers! - So why would they die? Good point Miiyii. I really love Danish; it sounds unlike any other language I've come across. How do you view the situation in Greenland? Is English particularly common as a foreign language? Umm.. English is a foreign language taught in the schools, but people in Greenland knows more Danish than they
know English (mostly) and speaks it better. As you maybe know, Danish is still the second language of Greenland, so there's around 4-5 hours more Danish classes in the schools where I live. But then again, even though the two languages are taught in school starting from 1st grade, there's many people not knowing Danish nor English, so traveling can be problematic in Greenland. :) 3 persons have voted this message useful | |||

I had the same problem, initially between those two and then later between Swedish and Danish (the latter because I wanted to access Greenlandic resources). I eventually opted for Swedish simply because it has the most speakers. I don't think it really matters between the two you mention, since they are at least 90% the same language. Minus a few orthographical differences. Norwegian is a bridge in a sense, since it has Danish orthography but Swedish-like tones and pronunciation. If you have little opportunity to use them, bear in mind Norwegian has the least speakers of all, while Swedish has the most.
