A distinction between voiced and unvoiced consonants is shown by the difference between [v] and [f], [s] and [z], et cetera. The voiced sounds are accompanied by vibration of one's vocal cords.
The correct word to use here is aspiration: the difference between the "p" in English pin and spin (at least in my dialect). The first "p" is aspirated -- it's accompanied by an additional burst of air that is absent in "spin".
