As a Southern Appalachian American, it has often been said that our dialect of English has "Elizabethan" roots but it is most influenced by Scots. Most of the original settlers in the Southern Appalachians were from the "borders" areas of Southern Scotland and Northern England. I see many similarities between Appalachian English and Scots!
