Last weekend I went out to eat twice. While I was eating wonderful dishes such as kung pao chicken or a ham and cheese omelet with green bell peppers, I started to wonder what these, and many other, dishes would be called in the four languages I am supposed to be learning. Kung pao is probably the most difficult to find a word for since I am pretty sure that kung pao is a transliteration from Chinese and so I wonder how it would translate into Finnish or Spanish. I am in the process of making wordlists for various foods but I'm not done with them yet so they will be in another message.

I also decided that since one common criticism of language classes in schools is, "Do you really mean to say that you've taken 4 years of language x classes and can't even order a sandwich?" it might be a good idea to learn how to order food in a restaurant so I'm learning those things as well.

For some unknown reason I've also begun dabbling/flirting with Georgian. I think it could be the alphabet and grammar that intrigue me most. Georgian only has 7 cases but still seems more complex than Finnish (14 cases) because there are many exceptions.

Hasta luego
Mick

Jag lyssnar på mycket musik och jag är trött. Jag lyssnar inte på spanska musik ikväll men jag läste om spanksa gramatik och ordförråd igår. Jag minns spanska stavning men jag glömmer ofta spanska ord. Tyvärr kan jag inte minns svenska stavning eller ordförråd. Det känns lite frustrerande att glömma svenska, men jag vet vad jag skulle göra: jag måste relaxar.

Nähdään pian
ja hyvää yötä
Mick

EDIT: I made two corrections, and I hope the conjugations for "tietää" and "olla" are now in the correct verb tense.

Heippa!
Mick

I think my Finnish here is ok, but it might be total gibberish so what I meant to write was: My last message was too short so I will write more today. I have listened to some spoken dialogues and I knew a few words, but unfortunately I did not understand the dialogues. I'm not worried, I'll continue listening. I listed some new words. I would like to study Swedish and Afrikaans also, but Finnish is much more interesting right now.

Mick

EDIT: I had to correct some mistakes. I was using "opiskella" (to study) but I think I should have been using "oppia" (to learn) instead. I changed some other words too, and I hope the changes I made are improvements.

Is it just my imagination or does my log get more readers when I post less frequently?

Yeah, this post should probably in Spanish and/or Swedish but I spent much of last week practicing Swedish pronuciation which I can't explain in Swedish yet. I was attempting to master the infamous "sje" sound which can be spelled sk, sj, skj, stj, sch and maybe there are a few more spellings but I forget them at the moment. I also practiced pronouncing the letters ä, ö and å because I kept confusing them.
Spanish has been ignored but I will resume studying it soon.

If you've read my previous logs, you know that I really like languages that allow double negatives and this feature is what makes Afrikaans and Spanish grammar so wonderful. Last year I did have a mini-project to learn about negation in Swedish and Finnish as well and was slightly disappointed when I did not discover any evidence of double negatives in Finnish though the fact that "en" conjugates like a verb was intriguing enough to more than make for the lack of double negatives. I think I may have found double negatives being used in Finnish, if I trust this Wikipedia article. I don't automatically dismiss information found in Wikipedia articles as incorrect but neither do I accept them as being the gospel truth, so this tidbit of information requires further investigation. I also learned a little about the three past tenses and the conditional tense (or is it conditional mood?) but that will be a subject for another post.

Hej då
Nähdään pian

Jag har relaxad, men jag måste inte bli självbelåten. Nu skriver jag svenska, finska och spanska kan vänta på imorgen. Jag har lärt mig någon stående uttrycken och ordförråd igår.

Den kort ordlistan:
till exempel - for example
Jag skulle vilja ha ett glas appelsinjuice - I would like to have a glass orange juice.
Kan jag få en smörgås tack? - Can (or may) I have a sandwich please?
Jag tar kanelbulle. - I will take cinnamon bun
Jag vill gärna ...- I would like ...

Jag är hungriga och trött så jag måste sluta nu, . Jag ska fortsätta denna ordlistan senare.

Ha det så bra
Mick

Jag lara mig mera ordförråd men ingen uttrycken. Ikväll har jag översätt en sång men jag ska inte tyk det här, det är väldigt deprimerande och jag känna mig glad nu. Jag fortsätter mina ordlistan nu:

jorden - the earth
varenda - every (single)
kolla - to check up on, make sure,
besegra - defeat, conquer, vanquish
be - ask, beg
förstöra - destroy
trycka ner - pressing down, to depress
kämpa - struggle, fight
låga - flame
släcka - extinguish, put out, quench
ruta - square
kyckling - chicken
risgrynsgröt - rice pudding

Kanske koncentrar jag på svenska för en stund. Jag tänker översätta mera sånger eftersom jag lär så mycket nya ord.

God natt
Mick
