After you have a sentence wrote, you kan in th edictionary new words look up, but I think not that you new words have to look up not.

Ek dink scriptorium is gewoonlik'n tussentyds tegniek, maar dit kon ook 'n begin tegniek wees.
I think scriptorium is usually an intermediate technique, but it could also a beginning technique be.

Mick, good job with your Afrikaans studies! Apparently they have been so effective that you are now forgetting English. (Just kidding, but it looks like that from the bolded parts, doesn't it? Or was that intentional?)

Thanks, although after three years I have to admit I still make embarrassing mistakes. The strange word order in the English sentences was intentional, as they were a literal translation to help me remember, and practice Afrikaans word order.

Ah, I see. Well, I like that older Germanic word order. I wish that we it still officially had. :)

Even though my last post in this log was over a week ago, word order seems like a good topic to continue with. I've learned more about how Afrikaans word order can change when a conjunction is used in a sentence. I think there are 3 groups of conjunctions in Afrikaans, and two of them cause word order to change. Below I will list some, but not all, words from each group and give more details about word order.

1st Group
en - and
maar - but (maar can also have other meanings, but they aren't relevant to this post)
want - because
of - if
These words do not change word order at all.

2nd Group
anders - otherwise
daarom - therefore
dus - thus
tog - yet
There are more words in this group but I won't list them here now; I want to explain how these words change the word order of a sentence. These words will be followed by a verb and if there are two verbs after the conjunction the first verb will follow th econjuntion directly. An example sentence could be "Jy mag hier sit anders kan jy aan die karpet sit." (You may sit here otherwise can you on the carpet sit.) I think my example is grammatically correct but I'm not sure.

3rd Group
dat - that
omdat - because (the second word for because)
wanneer - when (I think this is used for describing future events)
as - if
wat - (what, which, who)
When a 3rd group conjunctions is found in a sentence the verb moves to the end and a good example for this is a sentence I found a few years ago on Yahoo Answers though it repeats what I just wrote, "Die voegwoord wat die werkwoord na die einde van die sin forseer." (The conjunction that the verb to the end of sentence forces.)

Mick

Edit: I'm really tired and it's vey late so I'll check this post for mistakes later. Just to make it more clear, I've been focusing on Swedish a lot lately and this will probably continue because there are just enough similarities between Swedish, Afrikaans and English to make Swedish really interesting to me.

I think I'll translate both the Swedish and Spanish just so this will make sense.

I had hoped that the rain would stop on Monday and Tuesday. I have no problem with light rain but I can't ride my bike if it is *raining small nails* because I become very wet.

I am focusing for the most on Swedish now, but I have ignored not other languages.
I will write more tomorrow.

*"Det regnar småspik" literally translates as "It rains small nails" an expression that I believe means heavy rain. I like it much better than the English expression, "It's raining cats and dogs".*

If I do not write in Spanish now, it's possible I could forget a lot of vocabulary and grammar. I am listening to Swedish music now but I am not confusing the two languages. Last night I listened to an interesting radio program on Sveriges Radio about psychology. I'm not sure I understood much, but I don't care. It's more important to get accustomed to the sound and rhythm of Swedish.
