What would you recommend for learning some basic Turkish? Are there any courses out there that are particularly good? Any that are particularly bad and that should be avoided? and why?

thanks!

In English, I've heard good things from TY Turkish, and I've seen a book by Dover on Turkish grammar somewhere. You may also want to check out Assimil's Türkisch ohne Mühe. This is just from what I've heard and from reading reviews; I haven't actually used any of these products.

I liked Elementary Turkish by Kurtuluş Öztopçu, although the accompanying audio CDs are of low quality. Perhaps they've been cleaned up in the newly-released second edition.

I can also highly recommend Hugo's Turkish in Three Months, in spite of the ridiculous title.

I see you know German. Don't neglect Turkish materials published in German, especially Lehrbuch der Türkischen Sprache, Herbert Jansky, 9th ed., 1980. Forum member Fasulye was happy with the Güle Güle course, but I've never seen it.

A few other links:
Türkisch Kurs
SesliSözlük
Turkish Handbook (NMELRC)

Working with all of the above more or less simultaneously, in addition to many hours trying to read Turkish websites and blogs, had given me a thorough grounding in basic Turkish.

Good luck!

As for TY Turkish, if you're grammatically minded like I am, I'd suggest looking at the older edition by Lewis. The newer one by Pollard is fine for conversation, but rather light on grammar.
Lewis' reference grammar is also highly recommended.
There's also Elementary Turkish by Thomas/Itzkowitz, which, though a bit dated, is still very useful (and a lot cheaper than Lewis' grammar).

Langenscheidt's New Standard Turkish Dictionary, by Resuhi Akdimen, is the best Turkish-English, English-Turkish dictionary I know of.
If you know German, use those materials too, as overall German speakers wanting to learn Turkish are rather better served by textbooks and materials than Anglophones are.
