Hi Phil,

Bye for now!

Hi Mari,

ლაპარაკისატვის ("in order to talk about work").

Anyway, have a good weekend! (How can I say this in Georgian?)
Phil

ENGLISH:
Hi Mari,
Thanks very much for your reply. I think you can go from Holland to France easily by
bus or by train. If you have time you should go.

What does your brother do in Malta? Does he work there? I guess there aren't many
Georgians in Malta!

This evening I'm going to a restaurant with one of my colleagues to talk about work.
These types of meetings are very important in Japan but for me they are tiresome. I
prefer to go to restaurants and bars with my friends! Unfortunately this colleague is
older than me so according to Japanese etiquette I have to go.

Anyway, have a good weekend!
Phil

Hi Phil,

By the way, I asked you a question about verbal nouns in Georgian a while ago and you
suggested that I give you some examples. So here they are.

For example, how do you say in Georgian:

"I am happy to hear that..."
"I was sad to learn that..."

In these examples we use the infinitive in English, but since Georgian verbs have no
infinitive I don't know how to say them.

Looking forward to hearing from you!
Phil

And now an update on my progress in general. I went on a bit of a book-buying spree a
week or so ago and a couple of my purchases have arrived. The first one to arrive was
Georgian Language Intensive Course I, by Nikolaishivili, and to be honest it's not so
great. It uses different terms to most of the other books I've read for a lot of the
grammatical features specific to Georgian, and it's really poorly laid out. The plus
side is that it comes with three CDs so I can get some badly needed listening practice.

The second one is Lehrbuch der georgische Sprache by Abuladze and Ludden, which has
been a revelation in two ways. Firstly, my German is still good enough to understand
about 98% of it, which lets me know that those 12 years of study weren't completely
wasted, although I don't think I ever imagined I'd end up using my German to study
Georgian, and secondly, I am finally getting to grips with the direct object prefixes
for Georgian verbs. I am still strictly at the recognition only stage, but this is
infinitely better than a couple of weeks ago when I was at the "what the f*** are you
on about?" stage. In short, this is a really good book and I have been glued to it for
the past few days.

Now I just need some kind soul to come along and teach me how to do time expressions
and about the various uses of რომ.

I am neglecting listening and speaking in favour of reading and writing a little too
much, I think, so it may be time to switch on Rustavi Ori again, or at least wind up my
iPod.

Well, I turned on Rustavi Ori (a Georgian TV channel that you can watch for free on the
Internet) and stumbled across the Georgian version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?",
sponsored in Georgia, it seems, by various toothpaste companies.

This was perfect for me as I knew the format and the questions came up on the screen
written in Georgian. I even got the answer to the 3,000 Lari question (which was "What
is the Bill in Bill Clinton short for?") Sadly, I was not able to catch the Georgian for
"Final answer", but between the programme and the interspersed toothpaste adverts I was
able to understand quite a lot (by "quite a lot", I mean somewhere around 10%, but that's
good enough for the time being) so it gave me a real confidence boost.

Then the news came on and I was utterly baffled again... Ah well, baby steps...

Hi Phil,

საფრანგეთshi tsavide. ubralod jer-jerobit veravin vnaxe rom tsamomkves :) marto xom ar
tsaval?!

droebit!

Mari
