Okay, this is my first post, I'll have plenty more but for now I have one simple question. Does anyone know of any good Spanish books for beginners that are under $20 (less would be great)? I don't care about audio coming with it as I have plenty of audio lessons, as well as Spanish pdf files. But I do like having real, tangible books.

Thanks affe, I'll see it my local bookstore has it. I'd prefer that to ordering it over the Internet. How well did it work for you?

I'm slow... Mostly I only get to use Pimsleur in my car to/from work. But I try to read some of this at lunch. There are a lot better and more in depth reviews on this site. For myself, I really enjoy the dual language approach. Especially the fact that they give the direct translation in addition to the appropriate English translation. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

Well, if you don't mind ordering from the Internet, I received Spanish Made Simple (1950s edition) and Berlitz Self-Teacher (c. 1949) for a penny and about $6, respectively on amazon. You could also look for the Living Language Beginners program which I saw a month ago for a penny. I really haven't used any of the programs I've mentioned extensively. I'm just saying there are some great deals out there if you are looking for them, if you don't mind used books.
I'd say go to the library and look for what works best for you, and see if you can get something cheap online before buying anything. At least that's what I'd do if I were starting out looking for resources again. Good luck. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I was looking at a local bookstore and found a couple for decent prices. I plan to look at other stores, but I want some opinions on these. an easyreader, which I don't think would be too useful until I get the basics down, and I found a book called "Just Enough Spanish Grammar: Illustrated" which kind of looked like a kids book.

For a guide full of memory tips and tricks (for English speakers), Margarita Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish is an interesting book. It definitely does not take the conventional approach, but by the end, you've encountered a lot of vocabulary and sentence types. In its explanations and memory tricks (though not its actual organization), it feels a lot like what you find in the Michel Thomas Spanish course. And my copy (a few years old so it might have gone up a little) was $10 or $12.

Anything from your local library.
If it's good, buy your own copy when the loan period is over. If it's bad, hand it back and borrow something else. 1 person has voted this message useful |
