For me, it's Assimil all the way. Complete the "New French with ease" and the "Using French" courses and you will have a very firm grounding in French, enough to be able to read and listen to native materials. In fact, after starting Assimil I wondered how much quicker it would have been if I had just skipped Michel Thomas altogether. Start at the beginning too, because although you might understand it, and covered a lot of this, already: hearing it in a real French accent and pronouncing it correctly is very important. Also, a lot of the nouns you will come across will be completely new to you, even in lesson one. La fontaine? C'est joli? Both of these are used in the first lesson and I'm almost 100% sure that Michel Thomas will not help you with either of these terms.

Should I get that new Assimil course or the old one? Some people here said the old "Without Toil" courses were better for some reason.

Whichever one you like, I know there seems to be some love of the older versions on here, I have the newer versions though, as I'd hate to sounds like I was from the 50s. I'm sure a lot of people who use the older versions have ways around this, but it's just my personal preference. You can even find them on uz-translations, although technically not too legal. I bought one after downloading it though, without trying it for free I would never have paid for one.

Why not use both?

I've tried out the first few lessons of "New French with Ease" and I must admit that it's excellent! Thank you for your recommendations.

PS: I've also tried out FSI French, but it's somehow dry and doesn't fit into my learning style.
