I'm not sure bookwise, as I'm using mainly audio courses right now, but that mumbled mur
mur will go away when you listen to enough. I think it'll take longer with French than it
would with Spanish, but I haven't been studying Spanish long and I can differentiate
between words that are spoken, even if I don't know them. It helps that I listen to a lot
of Spanish music and I know some Latin.
