I've been trying to get my head around some problems I'm having with pronunciation, mostly regarding the letter "r"
Pronunciation of "r" at the beginning and "rr" seem pretty much universal, but the "r" in the middle of a word gives me mild headaches. I sometimes hear it pronounced like "h" and other times like a normal r in words like ; verde, deserta, barco, porta. I'm guessing this has got something to do with regional accents rather than a confusing rule about the letter r. Could someone give me some details on this? Also, how can I make a distinction between accents like Paulista and Carioca regarding the letter "r" ? And if anyone used it, what's the accent used in Assimil's Brazilian Portuguese course? Hi,
the pronunciation of the "r" in the middle of words is really a matter of regional accent. But for academic purposes, I do think the most respected and qualified portuguese is the one spoken at the south (of Brazil). There are lots of ways to pronounce the "r": Northeast: "r" as a soft gutural "r" (like the German or French "r" but softer) Rio's: soft gutural, a little stronger than the northeast one South 1: like the English "r" in the word "word" but softer (not so melodic, much softer, lasting less) South 2: a mixture of the English "r" in the word "word" (softer) and the Russian "r" (by the tongue at the top of the mouth), but without the trembling of the tongue like in russian (i don't know how to call that in russian) I recommend you to learn the last one.
