I just came across this post on the Librivox forum. The person who posted this really made a great compilation that some others here may find useful.
http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=21482

Included are selections in more than 25 different languages.

A small sampling of titles:
A primer of English for foreign students (1916) by Thorley
French Translation Self-Taught by Guillaume H. Talbot
Spanish with or without a master a thorough and easy course for self-instruction or schools (1898)
An Introduction to the Greek of the New Testament
Arabic simplified : a practical grammar of written Arabic in 200 lessons : with exercises, test-papers and reading-book (1921) by Upson & Wilcox
Esperanto in Twenty Lessons by Griffin
Colloquial Chinese by Whymant
Gaelic vocabulary and phrase book by James Munro
Sumerian Grammatical Texts by Langdon

Lots of useful resources there, particularly for less-studied languages. I'll have a look at the Tamil texts.

Thanks a lot!

Many thanks for this posting. While the books linked are rather old (the Turkish one uses Arabic script), there's a wealth of material here. I'd especially recommend the vocabulary lists in Thimm's Self-Taught series. They're not so short as to be useless, but not so long that you can't actually learn them. A caution: Some of the vocabulary is outdated, so if you encounter a word that seems unfamiliar, use a modern dictionary to verify if that's still the word in use. Once you've done this, however, you'll have a nice list to skim in your free time, put into your SRS, etc.
