Hello, I'm new to this site but, I'm learning Portuguese and I have trouble with the
imperfect tense. It seems easy enough but, I have trouble determining when to use it
especially the words estava, era, and fui since they all can mean "Was" in English. Can
anyone tell me the rules or times when I should use the imperfect tense?

Hello!!!!
Imperfect tense in Portuguese denotes past time (pretérito imperfeito). Concerning your question: the verb “to be” means “ser” or “estar”, so look at:
1)estava – Ex: I was in my home this morning.
Eu estava, tu estavas, ele estava, nós estávamos, vós estáveis, eles estavam
2)era – Ex: I moved because my apartment was very old.
Eu era, tu eras, ele era, nós éramos, vós éreis, eles eram
3) fui – Ex: I went to the my uncle’s house last weekend.
Eu fui, tu foste, ele foi, nós fomos, vós fostes, eles foram
My tip: ‘tu” e “vós” are unusual on the streets (daily), so to learn portuguese as second language I suggest more attention in the others personal pronouns.
