I've decided to go with using the NPCR textbook as a structured course, along with
CSLPod.com, lingt.com, and Livemocha. I believe these together should be work well.

I just want to put in a word for Jr. College. At least here in the SF Bay area we have Mandarin classes at Jr. College, and they are nearly free. I took some Japanese classes at the beginning, and they gave me some confidence I wasn't running too badly off the rails with pronunciation. If I ever take on Mandarin, I think I'd feel more confident with a teacher for learning basic pronunciation. If you already have a decent vocabulary from Rosetta Stone or other flash card software, the class should be relatively stress-free, and you can focus on listening, grammar and other aspects of the language rather than worrying about vocabulary.

Pronunciation and tones is a huge factor in Mandarin, just make sure you're trying to
pronounce the words as accurately as you can :) good luck
