RhinoSpike: Foreign Language Audio on Demand!

"RhinoSpike is an online language learning community tool that lets users around the
globe exchange foreign language audio files. Get any foreign language text read aloud
for you by a native speaker.

Our system is simple. You submit some text that you want read aloud by a native
speaker. A native speaker records it for you and sends you the audio file. You use that
audio file to help yourself learn your target language. Embed it into your flashcards
in your favorite Spaced Repetition System (SRS) program, download it to your mp3
player, or listen on your computer.

To encourage users to help each other out, we have a queue system in place. When you
submit an Audio Request, it is inserted into the queue for that language. Native
speakers of your target language can then find your Audio Request and make a recording
for it. To get faster results you can record your voice for users learning your
language. Doing so will move your Audio Requests forward in the queue. Give and you
shall receive!"

Summary:

- Submit some text that you want read aloud in a foreign language.

Your submission becomes an Audio Request and will be sent to native speakers.

- Record your voice for an Audio Request in your native language.

Recording for other users bumps your submissions ahead in the queue.

- Download the audio file for your submission. Learn the language through real, native
input!

Load it onto your ipod or add it to your favorite SRS/Flashcard program.

Does recorded audio get stored in an audio library?

Is there a limit to how long the texts can be?

It sounds like a wonderful idea, but it's a bit annoying that you have to sign up to preview - eg no way to see if there is audio available in your target language or native speakers already signed up. I am also interested to know if there is an audio library everyone can access.

Yes, the audio is stored so everyone can access and download it.

You can get many recordings for one request.

I can't find where to download other people's recordings... does one have to contribute first before getting access to them?

[Edit: Nevermind. Going to the "record" page for any of the sentences allows you to play back any of the recordings for that sentence.]

Caution:
Ts&Cs wrote:
While you retain all rights in such communications or material, you grant us and our agents and affiliates a non-exclusive, paid-up, perpetual, and worldwide right to copy, distribute, display, perform, publish, translate, adapt, modify, and otherwise use such material for any purpose regardless of the form or medium (now known or not currently known) in which it is used.

(my emphasis)
Most website Ts&Cs state that they can use the material for "delivery and promotion" of the website's main function. RhinoSpike, on the other hand, say "we'll do anything at all we want with it, ever". They can make their own commercial courses using your voice, and never pay you a penny. Heck, they could even use it to trick you into recording a testimonial for a product or an advertising slogan! (Imagine if you'd been asked to record "I'm lovin' it" ten years ago -- you'd never have realised!)

Caveat emptor....
